Слой порошкового материала на поверхности изделия (или полуфабриката), нанесенное каким-либо способом. Для получения порошкового покрытия используются порошки металлов (Cr, Ni, Ti, Mo, Al и др.) и сплавов (FeCr, FeCrAl, CrNi, CoCrNiB и др.), оксидов (Аl203, SiO2> ZrO2, Cr2O3 и др.), бескислородных соединений (карбидов, боридов, нитридов и др.) тугоплавких металлов, органических материалов, а также их смесей. Наиболее широко применяются газотермические методы нанесения порошковых покрытий, включающих нагрев каким-либо источником теплоты напыляемого порошка и его направленное перемещение газовым потоком на поверхность основы. В зависимости от источника теплоты различают газоплазменное и детонационно-газовое напыление, а также электродуговую металлизацию. Наносить порошковое покрытие можно также методом припекания, для чего порошок на связке закрепляют на поверхности основы, а затем подвергают термообработке.
